The first line of this verse is a very real comfort to me today, as I begin to face the reality that someone very close to me very likely will see her life cut short – short, that is, by our imperfect, human standards. It is at times like these that I have only my faith on which to rely, to trust that God has a purpose for her life, and that He will fulfill that purpose – that He will not abondon the works of His hands. But I know His Word is true, and I am thankful that He has given me a role to play in her life. I really can’t say anything more detailed (yet), but those close to me know what/whom I’m talking about.

A very cool thing to note about today’s readings is that Paul started his missionary journey not after an extensive planning session / retreat / etc. (all our modern day stuff of what we have to do before embarking on something…) No! Paul started his missionary journey after a time of worship & fasting and being filled with the Holy Spirit! The Spirit moved and thus Paul moved! It was that simple.
True, when the time to move came, the Spirit spoke, and the disciples acted; however, Paul spent eleven years in preparation for this moment of sending – 11 years of service and teaching and training in the Word under the believers in Jerusalem and Antioch.

This moment represents a seminal point in the spread of the church. The persecution drove believers outside of Jerusalem into Judea and Samaria, and the Holy Spirit used this scattering to begin to reach the Gentiles. The church at Antioch became the focal point of Gentile outreach; Paul’s missionary journeys originated from this church. It is this church that gets the following distinction (verse 26): “The disciples were called Christians first at Antioch.“
